λοίσθια δὴ Δορκώ σε ὀλοὰν ἐπὶ νᾶα κιόντα
τάλαινα μάτηρ, Καπίων, ἐπέμψατο·
οὐ γὰρ ἔθ’ ἅγε ὑπέδεκτο φίλον τέκνον, ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ πόντωι
ἀφείλετο ἥβας ἄνθος ἄγριος κλυδών.
5 πολλὰ μεθ’ ἁδυβόα δόνακος κυκλίοις ἐν ἀγῶσι
ἄνακτα μέλψαντα ἐν χοροῖσιν Εὔιον.

“Kapion. For the last time the miserable mother Dorko accompanied you to the
sorrowful ship; no longer has she welcomed her dear son, but on the sea the
cruel wave has taken the flower of youth; many times with the sweet-sounding
reed he celebrated the lord Evius in the choirs, in the dithyrambic contests.”

“Kapion. Per l’ultima volta l’infelice madre Dorko ha accompagnato te sventurato che ti
rechi alla nave funesta; non più infatti ella ha accolto il caro figlio, ma sul
mare il crudele flutto ha preso il fiore della giovinezza; molte volte con la
canna dal dolce suono celebrò il signore Evio nei cori agli agoni ditirambici.”

This refined epitaph for Kapion in iambic trimeters, focuses on a moment that is rarely described: the trip to reach the place of the performance, evoked here by the images of farewell at the harbor before the anchor raises and of the tragic moment of death due to the cruel sea.

Questo dotto epitafio di Kapion in trimetri giambici descrive un momento che raramente viene raccontato, quello del viaggio per raggiungere il luogo dell’esibizione, evocato qui dall’immagine di un’abitudine tutta familiare del saluto presso il porto, prima ancora che la nave salpi e conduca il giovane auleta alla tragica fine.
