“Under the archonship of Xennis, … he proposed: it has been deliberated on this matter: because [–]teis from Macedonia, the son of Xenokrates, philosopher who stayed with us, having held many lectures obtained good fame and teaching in the gymnasium he instructed the ephebes and behaved in a virtuous way in town; it has been resolved by the assembly to elect him proxenos and benefactor of the city of Haliartos … both he and his descendants, and he shall have the right of possession of land and home, the right to pay the same taxes as citizens, immunity for his own person and for his possessions in peace and war equally both on land and at sea, and all other privileges also granted to other proxenoi and benefactors. May the polemarchoi engrave this decree in the place they consider the most beautiful.”

“Essendo arconte Xennis, … propose: è stato deliberato su questo argomento: poiché [—]teis macedone, figlio di Xenokrates, filosofo che soggiornò presso di noi, avendo tenuto molte audizioni ottenne buona fama e insegnando nel ginnasio istruì gli efebi e si comportò nobilmente in città; è sembrato bene all’assemblea che egli sia prosseno ed evergete della città di Haliartos … sia lui sia i suoi discendenti, a lui sia concesso il possesso di terra e casa, il diritto di pagare le stesse tasse dei cittadini, l’immunità per la propria persona e per i propri beni in pace e in guerra ugualmente sia per terra che per mare, e tutti gli altri vantaggi concessi anche agli altri prosseni ed evergeti. I polemarchi facciano incidere questo decreto nel posto che ritengono più bello.”
Commentary (en):
This proxeny decree from the city of Haliartos for a Macedonian philosopher dates to the period before the destruction of the city by the Romans because of its pro-Macedonian politics. A permanent residence in Haliartos based on the philosopher’s activity in the gymnasium could be proposed. His presence in the city was marked by a very active participation at the life of the community benefitting from numerous lectures and from the teaching offered to the young attenders of the gymnasium.
Commentary (it):
Questo decreto di prossenia della città di Aliarto per un filosofo macedone è da collocare nel periodo antecedente la distruzione della città ad opera dei Romani a causa della politica filomacedone. È possibile supporre per questo filosofo una stabile residenza ad Haliartos basandosi sulla sua attività nel ginnasio. È innegabile che la sua presenza in città fu segnata da un’attiva partecipazione alla vita della comunità, la quale potè ascoltare le sue numerose lezioni e beneficiò degli insegnamenti offerti agli efebi, giovani frequentatori del ginnasio.
