δὲ [τόδε τὸ ψάφισμα τὼς πολεμ]άρχως ἐν τῦ ἐπιφαν[εστάτυ τ]όπυ.

“… was archon, the synedrion and the people of Coronea resolved: since Zotion of Ephesus, the son of Zotion, poet of tragedies and satiric dramas, having in the past dwelt in our city, held a worthy conduct as befits the city and himself, and on this occasion having held an audition on his compositions in poetry, remembering our city and Athena, who before the other Olympians ruled the city from the beginning, obtained good fame. So that our city may prove to honor those who are worthy among the men, it seems good to the synedrion and the people of Coronea to praise the poet Zotion of Ephesus the son of Zotion for the commitment and other aspects of his behavior and to honor him with seventy-silver drachmas: the treasurer, the one who is currently in charge under the archon … shall record the expenditure for visitors; may he and his descendants be granted with proxeny and all the other privileges also assigned to the other proxenoi and benefactors of the city of Coronea and may he be crowned with an olive crown. The polemarchoi shall engrave this decree in the most visible place.”

“Essendo arconte…, sembrò bene ai sinedri e al popolo di Coronea: poiché Zotion di Efeso, figlio di Zotion, poeta di tragedie e di drammi satireschi, avendo prima soggiornato presso la nostra città mantenne una condotta dignitosa come si addice alla città e a lui stesso, e in quest’occasione avendo tenuto un’esibizione sulle sue composizioni in poesia, ricordando la nostra città e Atena, che prima degli altri Olimpi governò la città dall’inizio, ottenne buona fama. Affinché dunque la nostra città dimostri di onorare coloro che sono degni tra gli uomini, è sembrato bene ai sinedri e al popolo di Coronea di lodare il poeta Zotion di Efeso figlio di Zotion per l’impegno e gli altri aspetti del suo comportamento e di onorarlo con settanta dracme d’argento: il tesoriere, quello che è attualmente in carica sotto l’arconte … registri la spesa per i visitatori; sia riconosciuta a lui e ai suoi discendenti la prossenia e tutte le restanti benemerenze accordate anche agli altri prosseni ed evergeti della città di Coronea ed egli sia incoronato con una corona di olivo. I polemarchi facciano incidere questo decreto nel luogo più in vista.”
Commentary (en):
This detailed decree, in Beotian dialect mixed with the koine, recognizes honors and privileges to Zotion of Ephesus, poet of tragedies and satiric dramas, who seems to be at his second visit in town (ll. 3 and
5). On this new occasion, he offered a performance on the poetic works he had composed to celebrate the city and Athena Ithonia, first among the divinities of the city of Coronea (ll. 7-8). This poet was rewarded, for his prodigality and professional value, with truly substantial and uncommon recognition: public praise, the honor of seventy silver drachmas, proxeny and all associated privileges, and with an olive crown.
Commentary (it):
Il testo epigrafico, molto dettagliato e interessante, è in dialetto beotico con intrusioni dalla koine. L’onorato è Zotion di Efeso, poeta di tragedie e drammi satireschi, che sembra si sia trovato alla sua seconda visita in città (ll. 3 e 5). In questa nuova occasione, egli ha condotto una performance sulle opere poetiche da lui composte per celebrare la città e Atena Ithonia, prima signora della città di Coronea (ll. 7-8). Questo poeta è ricompensato, per la sua prodigalità e serietà professionale, con riconoscimenti sostanziali e poco ordinari: la lode pubblica, l’onorario di settanta dracme d’argento, la prossenia ereditaria e tutti i vantaggi ad essa connessi, e infine con una corona vegetale.
