5 χθαι τῆι βουλῆι καὶ τῶι δήμωι· Κλεόνικον Κλεοκράτου Ῥόδιον
πρόξενον εἶναι καὶ εὐεργέτην τῆς πόλεως Ὠρωπίων αὐτὸν
καὶ ἐκγόνους καὶ εἶναι αὐτοῖς γῆς καὶ οἰκίας ἔνκτησιν καὶ
ἰσοτέλειαν καὶ ἀσυλίαν καὶ ἀσφάλειαν καὶ πολέμου ὄντος
καὶ εἰρήνης καὶ κατὰ γῆν καὶ κατὰ θάλατταν καὶ τὰ ἄλλα
10 ὑπάρχειν αὐτοῖς ὅσα καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις προξένοις καὶ εὐεργέταις.

“Under the priest Demokrates. Pythokritos son of Antheus proposed: since the τραγῳδός Kleonikos continues to be benevolent towards the city, publicly and privately procures advantages in all circumstances to the needy among the citizens, it has been decreed by the council and the assembly: that Kleonikos of Rhodes, the son of Kleokrates may be proxenos and benefactor of the city of Oropos, both he and his descendants, and they may have the right of possession of land and home, the right to pay the same taxes as the citizens, immunity for their own person and for their possessions at war and peace and by land and sea, and all further privileges granted to the other proxenoi and benefactors.”

“Sotto il sacerdote Demokrates, Pythokritos figlio di Antheus propose: poiché il τραγῳδός Kleonikos continua a mostrarsi benevolo verso la città e procura vantaggi in ogni circostanza ai bisognosi tra i cittadini pubblicamente e privatamente, è sembrato bene al consiglio e all’assemblea: che Kleonikos di Rodi figlio di Kleokrates sia prosseno ed evergete della città di Oropo, sia lui sia i suoi discendenti; a loro siano riconosciuti possesso di terra e casa, diritto di pagare le tasse alla pari dei cittadini, immunità per la propria persona e per i propri averi sia in guerra sia in pace, e per terra e per mare, e tutti gli altri vantaggi accordati anche agli altri prosseni e benefattori.”
Commentary (en):
Two honorary decrees attest to the activity of the Rhodian τραγῳδός Kleonikos in Delphi and Boeotia (Petrakos 1997, 179). Unfortunately both texts appear in a synthetic form and lack the motivation section. The identification of this actor with the [ -ca. 5- κ?]ος attested in an Athenian catalogue as victor at the Lenaia (after 278 – before 260 BC, see Ghiron -Bistagne 1976, 59 pl. VI) probably needs to be rejected as for the almost complete integration required to complete the lacuna of the name and for the possible chronological inconsistency with the other two inscriptions.

Due decreti documentano l’attività dello specialista di tragedia Kleonikos da Rodi presso Delfi e Oropo. La forma sintetica dei provvedimenti non consente di ricostruire le motivazioni e le circostanze delle benemerenze concesse. La proposta di identificare questo personaggio con il [ -ca. 5- κ?]ος che figura in un catalogo ateniese in qualità di vincitore al festival dei Lenaia tra il 278 e il 260 a.C., probabilmente non è accettabile per via dell’integrazione quasi totale del nome e per la possibile incongruenza cronologica con le altre due iscrizioni.
